Mission Statement
"To create a happy, vibrant school offering quality education in a challenging, sharing and caring environment."
A sound values-based education is one of the most precious gifts that a parent or family can provide for their child. Through education we enable our children to develop their talents, treasure their uniqueness and prepare them to contribute meaningfully to society. At St George’s, we combine the richness of more than 160 years of tradition with innovation, embracing the fast changing demands of the information age. We believe in creating a safe, nurturing environment in which each learner is valued, encouraged and enabled to develop to their full potential. Our pupils are educated not only to succeed academically, but also to approach the world as confident, compassionate, well rounded and integrated human beings. The spirit of the school is best experienced by a personal visit as no prospectus can fully capture the colourful and dynamic richness of our environment. We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet you and show you around. Julian Cameron, Headmaster
Why St George's Grammar School

St George’s is a small co-educational school, with over 500 learners from Grade R (pre-primary) to Grade 12. It is situated in Mowbray at the foot of Devil’s Peak.

The school is a leader in transformation in education and was the first to appoint a Diversity Coordinator to guide St George’s in developing an inclusive, anti-bias approach in all spheres of school life. We also fully subscribe to the National Policy on Inclusive Education.

St George’s is dedicated to drawing on the rich diversity of South African society, offering within a nurturing and happy environment, an excellent academic and extra–mural programme that includes space for spiritual growth, ecological awareness and appreciation of the arts, together with a commitment of service to the greater community.

We believe that the way we educate our learners will help them to live happy, purposeful and successful lives. Both inside and outside the classroom, we aim to create in them a life-long appetite for learning. To this end, they are taught how to learn and communicate and adapt, and above all, how to think.

We pride ourselves on the individual attention that we are able to give our learners, academically and extra-murally. Our staff – learner ratio, small classes and ‘family’ atmosphere enable all our learners to be well known to one another. We recognize the uniqueness and infinite value of every individual girl and boy.

As an independent school, we are free to experiment and innovate. We are able to challenge the gifted, to develop the interest of the average, and to make curious the under-achiever. Above all, our methods and techniques infuse our learners with a quiet confidence in themselves and in their abilities.

SMALL SCHOOL
The average class size is under 26, which means each learner receives individual attention and a close relationship develops between learner and educator, which enables us to more fully meet each individual’s needs. Learners are encouraged to communicate and develop respectful relationships with one another and with educators, preparing them for their roles in life. Asked what their favourite thing about St George’s is, our learners will always list the sense of being part of a family, and the security of knowing everybody and being known by all..

GREAT FACILITIES
However, we don’t let our smallness hold us back when it comes to developing the very best facilities. Our AudioVisual Centre includes two high specification computer centres, a library, media centre, and a fully equipped lecture theatre. On the creative side, we have a new art centre and gallery and dedicated drama and music departments. A separate building houses our Design & Technology centre. For the sporting types the school boasts a large sparkling pool, a squash court, tennis courts and well kept sports fields.

EXPERT STAFF
Our highly trained and motivated team of teachers are certainly an important part of the St George’s family. Besides the usual complement of subject teachers, we include in our staff a dedicated Support teacher in the Prep School and our unique Tutor system in the Middle School means that every learner has a teacher available at any time to assist them with any problem or query.

PICTURESQUE SETTING
Our beautiful campus, situated at the foot of Devil’s Peak, is an ideal outdoor classroom during the warm summer months, and many classes are conducted under the majestic old oak trees or in the sheltered quad. We encourage learners to participate in projects such as the Food Gardens, with the Grade 7 learners digging, composting and planting their own vegetable beds. And of course, time is spent outdoors during Physical Education and afternoon sports. All classes go on regular camps and outings.

CONTINUITY
The fact that we accommodate pupils from all grades (prep to Matric) means that our students can complete their entire pre, primary and secondary education in familiar surroundings, and forge very strong bonds with the staff and educators.

ST GEORGE’S IS A FAMILY
In short, St George’s is a family that seeks to develop each family member to their fullest potential, and instil in each a lifelong love of learning that will carry them throughout their future careers.
